With the combined resources of the contracting and switchboard divisions, we have recently completed projects involving generator control at the Mater Hospital and the Capricorn Correctional Centre.
This involved the paralleling of two generators for emergency power, and synchronising of the sets to the grid for generator load testing. The control system utilises a PLC for monitoring and data acquisition. Logic inputs and outputs sense and operate the generators, sychronising circuit breakers and fuel system. Data from the multifunction meters on each of the incoming feeders and the generator supplies are input to the PLC using a MODBUS interface. This supplies information to the PLC to enable it to control the loading of the generators, enabling the system to either import or export power as determined from the grid.
The systems are fully automatic and allow the operator to start, monitor and control the system via a graphical interface from a computer within their maintenance office.
